Freshman Class ’16 Special

This is an annual tradition for for when the XXL Freshman Class is released to give a true freshman class. This year as clockwork XXL made their Freshman Class list based on already notible artist so they can promote thier brand over giving a chance to new emcees. As much as I love Dave East, Anderson. Paak, Denzel Curry, and Lil Dicky they are far from Freshman because they been doing work. Guys like Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, Desiigner, 21 Savage, and G Herbo are already well known. My list is for quality artists who aren’t getting the notoriety they deserve for the quality music they have released.

Tee Cambo is easily the most polished west coast emcee I have ever come across. He from Long Beach California and you only need to listen to his music to know such. He has the undeniable West Coast bounce but done on the highest level I have ever heard from an Indie. I have played his music for people who dont enjoy the west coast style but he has the perfect delivery to compliment his production filled with energy. Ultimately he becomes undeniable and you have to have this project.

Nick Grant is easily the best lyricist of this class. Honestly if XXL was really about giving new artists a chance instead of promoting themselves then he would have made it. This South Carolina native has superstar written all over him as he only released one tape and taken the game by storm with promotion. I expect great things from him as he is the most likely to reach the commerical industry in my opinon.

Who says that Chicago emcees have no skills? Sure you have commercial acts like Chief Keef who give the culture a bad name but you have emcees like God who shows you the lyricism that can be applied to the style. After listening to this project you will recognize the potential, honestly God show us exactly how Chicago music should be like. Songs like Code Red that gives the hype that you can only get with Drill Music but done on the highest possible level has become a must play for my playlist. He is an amazing talent filled with the potiential to change the way drill is done.

Donte Credo is an emcee from Shelby, NC who delivered a very unique project. As he represents Shelltown by sampling some of their promotional ads meant to increase tourism cross referenced with depressing news reports of criminal activity. The concept is awesome to go along with the skill and quality production displayed on every track.

This was a long time coming. A New Jersey emcee that I have followed for years before I started doing a Freshman Class. Recently he released a project called Grind God which was a prelude to his coming LP. An original project with 31 tracks. He is a quality artist that has been going in for a while and deserving of recognition.

This is a new addition to my Freshman Class, a bonus. The reason being is because this project is rather recent so it hasn’t had the time to make a consistent impact on my playlists. Yet I would be doing this list a discredit if I didn’t add these South Carolina emcees who have the best chemistry I have come across. Both Gemstar and Marvolus are lyrically potient as well as complimentary of each other making them the first group to make this list. The best part is that they aren’t lost as individuals as they both have their own unique sound.
